Advanced Data Protection Turned Off with no notification? Why?

I recently went through the process to enable Advanced Data Protection in my iPhone Pro 14. I followed all the step and received recovery key. Fine. Just looked today in my setting and it shows Advanced Data Protection is Off. When did it turn off and why? Seems I should have received some sort of notification if there was an issue. Now I'm wondering what happens if I turn it back on. Do I get a new recovery key that replace previous recovery key? I can't seem to locate any info online about this scenario.

Sorry, but not really helpful. I think I know what happened but was hoping someone more knowledgeable than me would confirm. And if I'm right, this should be addressed. I know I was successful in originally turning on ADP. My recovery contact got a notice and I also selected a recovery key which I received. However, when I checked, out of curiosity, a few days later the settings showed ADP was Off. When I went to enable it again, it showed some older devices owned by me that didn't appear previously. I suppose because they were not connected to internet previously??? I have not tried to delete them and turn ADP back on because 1) who knows if it will turn off again 2) I assume I'd get new recovery key to replace(?) old recovery key (but not sure). Anytime a security feature changes without user input/permission the user should be immediately notified which did NOT happen. Apple needs to fix this.

Hey tbarkermn,

We'd be happy to help out. We couldn't speculate on how Advanced Data Protection was turned off or didn't get set up properly. Apple also wouldn't have any ability to make changes, only you as the user would as outlined here:

The Advanced Data Protection and iCloud.com web access settings can be modified only by the user. These values are stored in the user’s iCloud Keychain device metadata and can only be changed from one of the user’s trusted devices. Apple servers can’t modify these settings on behalf of the user, nor can they roll them back to a previous configuration.

This further outlined at the following resource: Advanced Data Protection for iCloud - Apple Support

If you have any other questions or concerns though, it'd be best to reach out to Apple directly for support on this matter here: Get Support

We hope this helps out.

Take care!
