How do you draw a straight underline in Preview?

There was time when using Apple was easy to use but the last couple of years they have made doing what used to take seconds more laborious typically with more clicks involved rather than less.

I used to be able to draw red lines under saved Preview PDF's. Not anymore even when I follow the instructions here: Highlight, underline and strike out text in a PDF using Preview on Mac – Apple Support (UK)

If I select the Highlight tool (underline pencil icon) and use the first squiggly line 4th icon I get a straight line but then it immediately goes into what looks like a series of fuzzy dots? If I use the 5th icon squiggly line it doesn't draw a straight line even though underline is elected?

Why is it not able to draw a straight line? Obviously it's available but it completely baffles me and I've been using Apple for 24 yrs... You used to be able to literally just go to the squiggle line select it and draw a straight line in previous OS's?

Please Apple stop adding extra click complexity where it's not needed and how about bringing back the Apple + T for Text too?

Thanks

Thanks @Luis Sequeira1

I would like the underline to be away from the text please.

I used to be able to put red underlines and verticals lines like this is a second? Not anymore it seems? Pls see image.

Also even though Preferences are set to open each pdf in a new window, since my Mojave upgrade to Monterey and then Ventura Apple has decided it knows best and is grouping files in tabs?

I have clicked and unchecked "open in separate window" till I'm blue in the face and it rarely lasts. Apple always decides I want the second document right next to the first in tab form. Super annoying when you need to compare two images side by side?

Cheers

Using Markup > Shapes, simply clicking the line segment icon drops a straight line into the PDF. Alternatively, you can press the command key while selecting the Sketch tool and any wiggly drawn line segment will snap to a straight line. In either case, choose the line thickness and color from the respective shape styles and color controls.

Oh, I see now. It is not a matter of being horizontal, but rather having a solid line rather than a "crayon-like" line.

I don't see any options to change that. This changed some time ago (maybe in Big Sur, I can't say for sure), it is not new in Ventura.

All any of us can do is use feedback and request that feature. It should be a simple menu choice, and I agree that it should be there (though, as a teacher annotation my students' submissions, I actually like the current form).
