Hi apho130,

When you're taking a macro photo, make sure to use the steps found in Take macro photos and videos with your iPhone camera - Apple Support

Take a macro photo or video
1. Open Camera, then select Photo or Video mode.
2. Get close to the subject—as close as 2 centimeters. The camera will automatically switch to the Ultra Wide camera.
3. Tap the Shutter button to take a photo or the Record button to start and stop recording video.

If those are the steps that you're taking, and you're still having trouble, check here for guidance: If the camera or flash on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch isn't working - Apple Support

Take care.

Hello apho130,

Thank you for posting to Apple Support Communities.

We understand that the quality of photo taken with the macro lens of your iPhone 14 Pro Max is not as expected. We'd like to help. Let's be sure that iOS is up-to-date.  Before updating, we recommend backing up your iPhone first. These articles can be of help. When you back up, you can back up using a Mac or PC rather than iCloud if you choose.
