Why is Files app crashing when I open a document

I’m opening documents that are 30-64mb, 30-200 pages, and files keeps crashing. I’m up to date on OS16.3.1 as well


As I scroll towards the bottom of the list (thats off to the left hand side) and select my page, the file will randomly kick me back to the last page I was on, and the list off to the left hand side will start re loading. Same thing if I’m at the bottom of the list and need to go up to one of the earlier pages.


I use stage manager so I’ll usually have safari open in case I need to reference something on the web. As I bring back the file it will start re loading and then crash all together. I’ve started to use acrobat to open files and it has no problem running them, the downside is I’m paying over $70 for acrobat.


These files are not that large. With 8gb of RAM space it’s very frustrating that this keeps happening.

There are few steps you can take to troubleshoot when apps close unexpectedly. Check out this article from Apple Support: If an app on your iPhone or iPad stops responding, closes unexpectedly, or won’t open - Apple Support.


1. Close and reopen the app
Force the app to close. Then open the app to see if it works as expected.
 
2. Restart your device
Restart your iPhone or restart your iPad. Then open the app to see if it works as expected.
 
3. Check for updates
To see if updates are available for the app, open the App Store, tap your profile icon, then scroll down to see if updates are available. If updates aren't available for the app, update the software on your iPhone or iPad.
 
4. Delete the app, then redownload it
Delete the app. When you do this, you might lose data that was stored in the app. Then redownload the app. Then check to see if the problem with the app is fixed.
