My MacBook Air won't accept my password

I am unable to get my MacBook Air to accept my password (I reset password on my iPhone and know it’s correct). But have not used MacBook for several years. What do I need to do to get in?

Hello LittleNan1030,

Thank you for reaching out to Apple Support Communities, and we'll be happy to help in any way we can. We understand you're having issues with logging into your Mac. Try the steps here to see if they can resolve the issue: Reset your Mac login password

"Sometimes a login password needs to be reset—for example, if you have forgotten the login password and can’t use a password hint to remember it.

The Mac login screen, showing your password hint and instructions for resetting your password.

Reset your login password using your Apple ID

If you associated your user account with your Apple ID, you can use your Apple ID to reset your login password.

  1. Click the question mark  next to the password field.
  2. If you don’t see a question mark , press and hold the power button until your Mac shuts down, then press the power button to restart your Mac.
  3. Click the arrow  next to “reset it using your Apple ID.”
  4. If you don’t see an arrow , see the Apple Support article If you can’t reset your Mac login password.
  5. Enter an Apple ID and password, then click Next.
  6. Follow the instructions to reset your login password.

If you don’t remember your Apple ID password, see If you forget your Apple ID or password.

Reset your login password using a recovery key

If you turned on FileVault encryption and created a recovery key, you can use the recovery key to reset your login password.

  1. Click the question mark  next to the password field.
  2. If you don’t see a question mark , press and hold the power button until your Mac shuts down, then press the power button to restart your Mac.
  3. Click the arrow  next to “reset it using your recovery key.”
  4. If you don’t see an arrow , see the Apple Support article If you can’t reset your Mac login password.
  5. Enter the recovery key, then click Next.
  6. Follow the instructions to reset your login password.

When a user’s login password is reset, a new default keychain is created to store the user’s passwords. See About your keychain password."

We hope this helps.

Cheers!

Hi LittleNan1030,

Welcome to the Apple (user-to-user) Community.

Re: What do I need to do to get in?

Wondering which Mac OS Version is installed on your MacBook Air:

Eg:

For an older model / OS : macOS Mojave or earlier

How to: Change or reset the password of a macOS user account in macOS Mojave or earlier – Apple Support

OR

For more recent MacOS versions:

What to do: If you forgot your Mac Login Password

https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT202860

For either: You may need your Apple ID password (usually an eMail address)

and Apple ID password.

Likely that will be the same info. you used to Log-in here.

Else:

If you forgot your password, and / or Apple ID:

https://iforgot.apple.com/password/verify/appleid

Trouble-shooting, if needed:

What to do: If you can't reset your Mac login password

https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT212190

All the best :-)
