Can’t set up new iPad—storage capacity error?

I have a brand new 256GB iPad and I’m trying to transfer all the data from my son’s old 128GB iPad using his AppleID. I keep getting an error that the new iPad doesn’t have enough storage. The new iPad is brand new and has double the storage capacity. This makes no sense. How can I set up the new iPad to be the same as his old one?

Which method are you using to transfer data? The following support article lists the three methods available: Transfer data from your previous iOS or iPadOS device to your new iPhone or iPad - Apple Support


Is the old iPad running the latest version of iPadOS? If there are any updates available, we recommend installing them before trying again as that could resolve any software conflicts.
