I bought the Apple Ultra watch for diving. Do I also need an Iphone?

How to get my Ultra watch working for diving? This is my first Apple product I've owned.

The watch has to be paired to an iphone 8 or above running ios16 or above in order for it to function.

Apple Watch Ultra with Wetsuit Can someone please advise as to what settings I’m missing for setting my Ultra to function while wearing a wetsuit? I need to be able to use it as I normally would: ie use Siri and the “Action Button” with Wetsuit gloves on. My specific use case is Kayaking in cold water. Turning off the lock is unacceptable as that interferes with Wallet and Apple Pay. I don’t want to reconfigure my Watch every time I get in the water (Which in the summer months can be daily). This seems like a major misstep as this product is marketed to “real adventures”. How can this work as a dive device if it can’t work with a wetsuit? I thought Apple Watch could finally handle cold temps and true off-grid use. Am I missing something?
