Erasing encrypted Intel Mac

I have an older (2011) Intel iMac with encrypted HD that I am preparing to recycle.

My aim is just to do a thorough wipe of the HD but should I turn off encryption first? FileVault is telling me this will take many hours. Since this will be recycled, is there any reason to turn off?

Thanks.

There is no need to turn off FileVault whether it is going to be recycled or whether it is going to be used by someone else in the future. Use the steps in the following (and note that step 2 is only for newer Macs). What to do before you sell, give away, or trade in your Mac - Apple Support
