I have two Apple Studio displays on tilt adjustable stands. Is there anyway to retrograde convert them to VESA so I can use portrait mode or do they have to come from apple as VESA capable? I so wished apple had created a stand for the Apple Studio Display which allowed portrait mode especially since it is automatic.

I can imagine multiple high-level meetings where Apple executives decided to make it has as difficult as possible to use the Apple Studio display in portrait mode either initially by not creating a stand that has that capability or retrospectively by making it difficult and expensive to make the change. Even if your willing to pay the inflated price for the Studio Display, you still don't get what you want.
The VESA option, like all other options, is available pre-purchase only. That said, schedule in-store repair, they might agree to replace the stand for a charge. Good luck!
