My "favorites" icons went blank after a friend used my MacBook Air. Now they show only initials, without the familiar colored icons for my favorites. How do I change this back?

Troubleshooting Greyed-Out Favorites:

You're not the only one. So, report this to Apple. As an example here: My Safari Favorites are Greyed Out - Apple Community

Provide Apple with Feedback:

Do your Part: If Safari does not suit your needs, then provide Apple with feedback on this. Apple wont get back to you directly, but the more they hear of this, the more they will know what their customs prefer, and what to include in updates to come.

To Provide Feedback:

  1. Go Here: Feedback - Safari - Apple
  2. Select: "Bug Report" for the "Feedback Type"
  3. Comment: on how Safari could be made to better suit your needs as a user
  4. Proceed form there as necessary
