filmstrips/thumbnail updates?

Hi,

Please can you tell me, is there a keyboard command to get the filmstrips/thumbnail in the timeline to update? I've done a grade and its still showing the original pregrade filmstrips/thumbnail, meaning it's hard to know what is done and what is not in the timeline.

I know in Resolve there is, just not sure how to get FCP to update it.

M2. latest FCP.

Thanks. Regards, Charles

I made this:

It's called "Clip Timeline". (It's a commercial product - 8 bucks).

It sits in the viewer... but can be added to an "adjustment layer" and can be turned on and off easily. The first thumbnail is the first frame and the last thumbnail is the last frame. The 9 other frames are spread out by 1/10th the length of clip that the effect is applied to (you can calculate how the thumbnails will appear.)

It uses a copy of the current state (processed effects) of the clips in the timeline.

Playhead position is indicated roughly by the over/under bar that animates (currently on the 4th thumbnail here), and an optional playhead indicator.

Thumbnails automatically update depending the time length (if you're using an adjustment layer title) and whether it is moved.

There's also a technique you can use that if the main subject is "off-center"/beyond an edge, the pan can be adjusted including all separate thumbnails individually (if that makes sense...) [positions can be keyframed over time!]

It works with any display aspect ratio clip (best applied to an adjustment layer using 9:16 clips in an HD DAR project).

The timeline can be placed at any vertical position of the screen. A contrast control can make the thumbnails brighter or darker than the "background" (easier to see OR a lower third background?)

If you'd be interested, I'll try to get you a link.

Thanks for taking a look at it!

I can't make changes to the timeline clips — I don't think anyone can.

Range Notes is free:

https://fcpxtemplates.com/range-notes/

Once you complete a grade (or any other kind of edit you want to remind yourself about), add a Range Note to the timeline. It does literally nothing but mark a range and display the "name" text (the note to yourself).

You can also set them up with Roles (and color them) as you go...

Might be helpful...

I don't know about "guru" — just been working "the angles" a long time.

You're right - Range Notes is just a completely emptied out Title template. It won't even function as an adjustment layer. You could do the same thing with your video clips - rename, etc., but the Title "stands out" and makes it easier to see and its "low profile" keeps it from getting in the way... too much.

You can also assign it video Roles to color it. A red color would be an easy way to see a section that needs more work ("to do") and a green color could indicate a finished state. Role colors would also separate the appearance of a note from a common Title.

You could also (temporarily) make it the Default Title so it can be easily and quickly added with Control-T. (Right click on the Title and Make Default Title.) And/Or, you could add it once to a project and stretch it out the entire length, and blade sections needed...

If you have to add extra steps to your workflow, you might as well make them as quick to deal with as possible!

To me you are a Guru!

Yes, will try that, by adding as default.

Another question, if you don't mind?

What is FCP X like for importing externally recorded sound and syncing? I'm going to have 4 tracks recorded on camera, all guide or back up tracks, 1+2 as onboard rifle mic, one at a lower level, 3+4 from Sennheiser 2 x G3/G4 radio mics. I've got another four tacks coming from the radio mics, two from each, recorded before they are transmitted and one at a lower level than main, for safety. Can FCP sync them all up easily and quickly? I used PluralEyes before but see they are fazing it out.

Thank you for your help! Charles

Motion is more my area of "expertise", but if you're dealing with audio from external sources, never use any mpeg compression (these have a tendency to lose sync over time). Audio should be WAV or AIFF, LinearPCM, and at least 16-bit. I'm more inclined to recommend 32-bit (higher bit resolutions are arguable...) ["Native" audio for FCPX is WAV — you coulda knocked me over with a feather!]

Final Cut should do a very good job of sync'ing with "proper" audio files. With the video, avoid fractional frame rates (very few people are [still] unaware how much this complicates things!!). If you're dealing with footage with fractional frame rates, "conform" them to whole frame rate projects.

I'm sure there are others here with considerably more experience in this aspect of editing that can help you out more.

Hi again,

All sound the same format. Probably: Linear PCM, 16 bit little-endian signed integer, 48000 Hz, maybe 24Bit, not decided yet, depending what the camera outputs. Everything 25FPS, UHD probably, rather than true 4K, unless I need the footage stabilised, and need pixels.

If you know of anyone on the FX end, let me know. I don't need much! Haha. Just quite a few muzzle flashes copied and pasted, and of course blended! You can see very rough cut footage of sequence at:

https://www.charlesteton.com/-/galleries/white-light

This footage was recorded 25FPS PAL DV 16:9 in B/W! This encoding was done with compressor over 15 years ago. I've been testing difference compressors for a HD 25P up resolution and interpolation, very good results so far.

I have pennies of my own money but not bananas!

Sorry it took so long.

Several years ago, I made a Muzzle Flash template as a generator. I redeveloped it as an Effect (today). It's only designed as a single shot flash... it doesn't handle automatic weapon fire.

Here's a sample (the clip is really old and I really didn't want to get into rotoscoping it... but it was the only one I had of someone firing a weapon.) Unfortunately, it's not B&W ;)

I know it's not ready for "prime time", but it has something that most others don't — the smoke.
