Cannot stay logged in to Yahoo in Safari 16.3

After updating to Safari 16.3, I can't stay logged into Yahoo mail. Previously, if I closed my Yahoo window without logging out, the next time I opened a Safari window (Yahoo mail has been my homepage) there would be an "account info" link that allowed me to reopen the mail without logging in again. Firefox still works this way.

Now, when I open a new Safari window, I still have the "account info" link, but when I click it, Yahoo makes me go through 2-factor authentication, every time. This is happening on an M1 Pro Mac (Ventura 13.2) and my 2013 MacBook Pro (Big Sur 11.7.3), with Safari 16.3 on both machines. Cookies are not blocked. Does anyone know why this is happening?

Hi Abovdal,

It's a pleasure to see your post in Apple Support Communities.

We understand that you're having to sign in to Yahoo every time you open it. By chance, do you have AutoFill enabled in Safari? We suggest checking that feature using these steps:

  • "In the Safari app  on your Mac, choose Safari > Settings, click AutoFill, then make sure “User names and passwords” is selected.
  • Make sure any information you want to autofill is saved in your My Card in Contacts. Safari can fill in only contact information that’s in Contacts. For example, if a form requires your phone number but it isn’t on your contact card, you must fill it in manually.
  • Make sure the webpage has fields AutoFill can complete.
  • Safari may be unable to tell which fields are for user name and password, credit card number and expiration date, and so forth.
  • If your Mac or Apple keyboard has Touch ID, and you want to use Touch ID to fill in user names and passwords or credit card information, choose Apple menu  > System Settings, click Touch ID & Password  in the sidebar, then turn on “Use Touch ID for autofilling passwords” on the right. (You may need to scroll down.) See Change Touch ID & Passwords settings."

More details here: If AutoFill doesn’t work in Safari on Mac

Let us know if this helps.

Take care.

Sadly, the problem has recurred, and I have been accessing my Yahoo mail with FireFox. When I open a Yahoo mail window in Safari, it still shows me as logged in, but then I have to go through 2FA to get there. On the other hand, Gmail does not have this problem, so maybe the fault lies with Yahoo, not Apple.

I assume that Yahoo puts a cookie on my machine when I log in, because whenever I eliminate them, I have to go through 2FA again. I have never had autofill activated on Safari, or any other browser. I sometimes have to access email from other devices, not necessarily mine, so I prefer to have my passwords in my own memory, so to speak.
