Migration Assistant problem

I'm trying to transfer from my old iMac (Catalina OS) to a new MacBookPro & I can't get any further than selecting my old iMac. Migration Assistant on the new computer sees my old iMac, but when I select it the "Transfer information to this Mac" keeps spinning "Checking iMac". I've done all the updates for the old mac, and both are using the same wifi network, but I can't get any farther than the spinning. How do I resolve this?

Hello KAH77,

Welcome to Apple Support Communities!

Depending on how much content you're transferring to your new Mac, it can take several hours for the transfer to complete. Even longer when using Wi-Fi, especially if there is any interference or drop in signal strength. If the process has become stuck, then try connecting your computers to each other via an Ethernet cable, and then try the migration process again.

Transferring files and folders takes a remarkably long time. Anywhere from several hours to a day or longer.

I just did such a transfer using two SSD internal drives in the same Mac, and the transfer was underway for several hours.

If you use your Wi-Fi network (rather than the preferred method of placing both Macs very near each other so they can establish an Ad-hoc connection) it will take far longer.
