Image Capture now hangs on importing photos between iPhone and iMac

I don't use iCloud for my photos, except to get Photo Stream to automagically move them from my iPhone to my iMac, where I store them locally. This works fine, in general, except for movie files, which PS does not move. Every few months I cable up the phone, and move those manually. However, since Photos refuses to recognize that it already has all the photos, it wants to re-import everything, not just the movies. Therefore, I used Image Capture for this operation.

I tried this yesterday, and moved the movies to a directory without issue. I then generally pull everything off the phone (again using IC) and put it in another directory, as a tertiary backup to the pictures. Of the 9,000 photos on phone, I pulled off about 7,000 and then the app stopped working.

It now hangs no matter what I try to import (any HEIC, JPG, PNG whatever). I can select all, I can select one, it doesn't seem to care. I've rebooted both devices, and even upgraded the phone to 16.3.

I highlight any file (or set of files, or all files) and it says it is importing, but the ball spins over top of my iPhone name (Spike), and nothing progresses. I'm not sure what to try at this point. Thanks for any direction.

Thanks to both.

After fiddling with the phone (cables, ports) IC finally decided to again download some photos, this time 2,000 of the remaining 2,500 and then stopped again. It worked in the same port and the same cable as previous times it had not, so little clarity there.

Could not make it find the final 500 in safe. Booted back to normal, did other work, tried it AGAIN from there, created a new local directory to dump the photos, and IC finished.

So. My task is complete, but no definitive help for anyone coming after with this problem except perhaps safe mode did something (although not everything) and perhaps creating new directories to move the photos into helps the app along.

I appreciate everyone's help.

Hi derring do,

It sounds like you've tried some great steps already to get Image Capture to work with importing your content.

Let's make sure there's no software or hardware issue that might be interfering with this process.

Try starting your Mac to safe mode:

Start up your Mac in safe mode

To rule out any issue with your cables or ports, use a different cable to connect and a different port on your Mac.

Let us know if you can complete the transfer.

Thanks for the ideas, finally had a chance to try them.

Have tried several cables, and 3 different ports (including 1 normally holding a functioning SSD) in Normal Mode with no change in behavior.

Booted into Safe Mode and I can't get the iMac to recognize the iPhone is plugged in. Again, tried a variety of ports and cables. So... I can't try Image Capture if it doesn't see the phone.

Sorry to introduce another wrinkle. Off trying to see why this would be the case. Thanks again.
