Is your Photos Library on an external volume or in the Pictures folder? If the Photos Library is on an external volume, try if enabling "Ignore Ownership on this volume" will help - as described in Move your Photos library to save space on your Mac - Apple Support

Have you been using iCloud Photos on the old Mac? Then you should enable iCloud Photos on the new Mac again.

Have you checked, if Photos can access the original image files? To check this, select an image in Photos and use the command "File > Export > Export unmodified original". Is this possible, or do you get an error message? If you get an error message, what is the message?

Thanks léonie. Photos library is in the Pictures folder. I am using iCloud photos with iPod touch. I managed to create a new library and assigned it to be the 'system library'. I think it's gonna work okay. With using the 'migration assistant' for setting up my partner's new Mac, I didn't realize how things would be. What I do on my computer as far as contacts and reminders they also appear on his computer. It's been like this for a while now -

I'm happy to have settled the photos app and have it working properly. Thanks for your reply.
