Removing messages from iPad but not iphone
Is it possible to remove messages from my iPad but not from my I phone to free up space

Yes. Before attempting to delete messages, ensure that iCloud Messages has been disabled in iPad settings.
- For iPadOS16:
Settings > [Your Name / AppleID] > iCloud > Messages > Sync This Device - set to OFF
- For iPadOS15 and earlier:
Settings > [Your Name / AppleID] > iCloud > Messages - set to OFF
