messages not attached to original message

I have an iPhone 14 pro using IOS 16.3. Usually, when I send a text to one or more people as a group, their responses come back with the original message. For some reason, since the last update I think, the responses now come as a separate message. This makes it difficult to ascertain which message people are responding to. In other words, if a send a message to A, B, and C and they respond, each response comes back as an individual message. If I have also sent a completely different message to A, E and F, their responses also come back as individual messages. So if A responds yes, I have no idea which message he is responding to.

Hopefully I have made the problem clear. Is there a setting I am missing somewhere that would fix this? I have looked everywhere for one and haven't seen any other complaints so I must be missing something.

Thanks, Susan

Hi sooperduty,

Got it. Thanks for checking that. Just to confirm, is this group message a mix between iPhone and non-iPhone users? If so, this could be expected behavior.

From what you've described, it sounds like you thread is sending as a Group SMS instead of a Group MMS. When it's a Group SMS, those replies will come in as individual messages.

Types of group text messages

There are three types of group messages that you might see: group iMessage, group MMS, and group SMS.

The Messages app automatically chooses the type of group message to send based on settings, network connection, and carrier plan. For example:

  • If you and your recipients are using Apple devices and iMessage is turned on, then the group message is sent as an iMessage.
  • If you send a group message to people who aren't using iMessage, then the message is sent as an MMS or SMS message.

Group MMS

These messages appear in green text bubbles and go through your carrier instead of Apple. In a group MMS, everyone can:

  • Send and receive photos and videos
  • See all responses from the group
  • Mute notifications

Group SMS

These messages also appear in green text bubbles and go through your carrier. Group SMS messages don’t support multimedia attachments, like photos or videos. All responses in a group SMS are sent as individual text messages and the recipients can’t see the other responses from the group.

Group iMessages go through iMessage. Group MMS and Group SMS go through your wireless carrier. It may be best to ask them about Group MMS so you can try to get these messages in one thread.

Hope that helps you get this issue resolved!

Cheers!

Hi sooperduty,

Thank you for participating in the Apple Support Communities. We understand group message replies come back as an individual message. If one of the group members does not have an iPhone, you'll want to make sure you have Group Messaging turned on for SMS/MMS.

  1. Go to Settings
  2. Tap Messages
  3. Scroll down to SMS/MMS
  4. Turn on Group Messaging if it's not enabled.

We hope this helps.

Take care.

Thanks again. Here is what I decided to try.... I turned group messages off then on again and, lo and behold, it is now working as expected. I'm the type of person who took years to learn to reboot a computer first then call for help if it didn't fix a problem. :)

Thanks for the information on the different types of messages; I learn something new every day.
