Disk Utility First Aid: The repair cannot be performed because one of more volumes are mounted (-69565)

I am running an iMac 27" 3.1GHz with 8 gig ram. I bought it mid 2020 and I believe it is running Catalina. The other day I clicked ok when it asked if I wanted to update. Was busy and thinking was for the minor updates the do for security and such but I think it tried to update to the newer OS. Well it has been frozen for 3 days now. I have tried safe mode but it will not boot up and just shuts off when I hold down CMND S. When I do CMND R it boots and freezes at loading bar and says 27 minutes remaining but stays there for hours. I've rebooted into disk utility and tried reinstalling the OS and when that is done it restarts and goes back to the loading bar and freezes up. I also get to the activation lock and unlock it and goes to recovery window but says "There are no users on lathe volume to recover".

I have a Time Machine back up do I need to erase the whole thing and restore from Time Machine. Do I erase just the Data drive, the HD drive, the HD Volume drive, Container or the Apple SSD Media.

Hey there Craig,

Thanks for reaching out to the Apple Support Communities.

For the best steps that can help with troubleshooting issues with your iMac booting to an Apple logo with progress bar, check out this link here for help: If your Mac starts up to an Apple logo or progress bar - Apple Support

If your Mac is stuck on this screen or keeps restarting
If startup never progresses beyond an Apple logo or progress bar:
1. Press and hold the power button on your Mac for up to 10 seconds, until your Mac turns off.
2. Turn your Mac back on.
3. If the issue persists, press and hold the power button until your Mac turns off. Then unplug all nonessential accessories from your Mac, including printers, drives, and USB hubs. You could have an issue with one or more of those devices or their cables.
4. Turn your Mac back on.
5. If the issue persists, once again press and hold the power button until your Mac turns off.
6. Repair your startup disk as described in How to repair a Mac disk with Disk Utility.
7. If the issue persists, reinstall macOS from macOS Recovery.

If the issue persists after going through the steps above, including reinstalling the macOS from macOS Recovery, the next best option would be to reach out to Apple Support for additional help and options.

We hope that's able to help.

Have a great day!
