Remove No-Longer-Accessible Phone Number from Apple ID (FT/iMessage)

I no longer have access to a particular phone number.

That phone number obstinately refuses to be deleted from my Apple ID's "Reachable at.." configuration, giving me the message when I try to Edit: "This phone number is being used for iMessage & FaceTime..." Since I no longer have access to the phone number OR the iPhone, I cannot turn-off iMessage or FT on it.

I have tried changing my Apple ID PW... The obstinate phone number remains in my Apple ID configuration.

What can I do to remove this inaccessible phone number?

See if Apple can help you with this.

Refer to this document for ways to contact Apple --> Choose your country or region - Official Apple Support

Select your country (also look for "other" regions), then a product. If you don't see one that handles your issue then keep experimenting with selections until you reach one that gets you a chat session or a telephone call and get the representative to redirect you.

Did you try doing as indicated in this document? Add or remove your phone number in Messages or FaceTime - Apple Support

Yes, I did. But w/o access to the inaccessible phone number AND iPhone, it would seem I cannot dis-associate that phone number from my Apple ID. Any other suggestions?
