Help I've had the "Unfortunately, there are some bad news for you” email scam.

I've had the above titled email. It was in my spam box. I know it's spam and a scam but it's pretty horrible all the same, especially as they know my full name, know my old address and know that I have moved.

Should I be running something like Malwarebytes on my Macbook Air please?

I doubt Malwarebytes or any other third-party app will stop all of those. If you are using Apple Mail, you can set up Rules that can at least automatically route some messages to the Trash.

Use rules to manage emails you receive in Mail on Mac - Apple Support

If you use a browser to access your mail, those usualy have rules options to do similar blocking, but your need to contact the provider you use for instrucitons. Some ISPs have their own "filter" systems.

They probably got it from public records or from someone's contact list.nothing you can do about that either - the only way to avoid it is to go online and/or share any personal info. I regularly put a fake phone number in when it is requested and definitely not needed and guess what: the number 000-000-0000 is sometimes rejected because it is "already in use". That is hilarious, LOL

Thank you for your reply. I do love a fake phone number myself.

However, I am still concerned that I might have malware on my MacBook. I always thought Apple pretty much protected its users from it. So I am still really unsure if I should be running some anti malware program or not.

Spammers want your money - either by going to their site or clicking on a fake link - all to get you to reveal info. That isn't considered "malware". You'd be getting popups trying to get you to install stuff. As long as you don't interact, there is nothing installed. You can run the free Malwarebytes just to check if you want. Don't run it continuously though - not necessary.
