Properly Giving Away an iPad:

A. Set your iPad Up Anew:

Set this up anew, as if you were to sell it. Back up what need be, and then perform as instructed here including the iCloud logout: What to do Before you Sell, Give Away, or Trade In your iPhone or iPad - Apple Support

B. Don't Share Your Apple ID:

I would also recommend that he has his own Apple ID assigned to that, and that you do not share yours. If you share yours, then he may make some purchases that you'd regret having him do. Does he have an Apple ID? If so, have him log in with it after you reset this. If not, then have him go here to create it: https://appleid.apple.com/account

Hello johnny4178,

Congratulations on your new iPad. To reset your iPad settings to their defaults, go to Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPad > Reset. Next, choose the desired option. Please note that if you choose the Erase All Content and Settings option, all of your content is removed.
