since I have loaded Ventura on my M1 IMAC my Launchpad icon screen shown sequential numbers against every icon and a number for every space occupied as well as a number for every space unoccupied by an icon
. How did this happen and can it be removed ?

I never use LaunchPad, but that sounds like Voice Control is enabled in Accessibility System Settings.
That will show a number next to every menu item, so it sounds familiar.

fixed it but what is the ulse of the number system ?

It shouldn’t have enabled by default. The numbers are for selecting items by saying the number of the item. I don’t use Voice Control, but that seems a lot easier than saying the name. Easier to implement, too.
