FCPX 10.6.5 constantly crashes on MacOS 13.2 running on 2021 MBPro M1 Max 64GB

FCPX 10.6.5 crashes consistently. I cannot even duplicate a project or move a new project into a keyword without a crash. Even dropping clips into a timeline produces a crash.

I'm in in danger of missing a vital deadline.

Please help :-(

Antivirus software: SentinelOne

Uninstall this. Third party antivirus do nothing but cause trouble, hinder performance for no benefit.

See: Effective defenses against malware and other threats

Kernel Extensions:

/Applications/Splashtop Streamer.app

[Not Loaded] Soundflower.kext - com.Cycling74.driver.Soundflower (1.6.7 - SDK 10.9)

[Not Loaded] SplashtopSoundDriver.kext - com.splashtop.SplashtopSoundDriver (1.0.1 - SDK 10.14)

[Not Loaded] SRXDisplayCard.kext - com.splashtop.driver.SRXDisplayCard (1.6 - SDK 10.9)

[Not Loaded] SRXFrameBufferConnector.kext - com.splashtop.driver.SRXFrameBufferConnector (1.6 - SDK 10.9)

These things are VERY OLD, and imported from an old system.

You should have started fresh with your M1 mac.

Importing everything has problem like this. Soundflower was great, but that 1.6.7 version has not worked in years.

More to come.

Thank you for posting the Etrecheck report up front - this is something I would have requested, so this saves time.

Your system drive is FULL - fix this now by making some space available.

(70GB of 2TB is way less than 10%)

Security updates disabled - Security updates are disabled. This computer is at risk of malware infection.

Apple security disabled - Apple security software is disabled. This computer is at risk of malware infection.

Always something that should be fixed. Having security updates installed automatically is separate from regular OS updates (which I do not have automatically installed).

I will look at the rest, but these two should be fixed.

Also don't forget to delete FCP preferences whenever there is a crash.

And... this:

[Loaded] com.google.keystone.agent.plist (Google LLC - installed 2022-10-26)

Command: ~/Library/Google/GoogleSoftwareUpdate/GoogleSoftwareUpdate.bundle/Contents/Resources/GoogleSoftwareUpdateAgent.app/Contents/MacOS/GoogleSoftwareUpdateAgent -runMode ifneeded

[Loaded] com.google.keystone.xpcservice.plist (Google LLC - installed 2022-10-26)

Command: ~/Library/Google/GoogleSoftwareUpdate/GoogleSoftwareUpdate.bundle/Contents/Resources/GoogleSoftwareUpdateAgent.app/Contents/MacOS/GoogleSoftwareUpdateAgent -runMode xpchost

Chrome and especially its keystone buddies are poison to video applications like FCP.

They hog the systemvideotoolbox and cause application to lag or crash, they even corrupt FCP itself.

See https://chromeisbad.com

for an explanation of what they do and how to completely removed.

Once you remove them, you will also have to delete FCP and download a fresh copy from the App Store.

Please post an EtreCheck report https://etrecheck.com giving the application Full Disk Access in Privacy System Preferences. Copy the report and use the Add Text button to paste the result into reply box.

Tell us about your library. How big is it? How many clips are in it? How many events are you using?

I agree. I believe something in the OS update 13.2 has crippled FCP. Ever since the update I am not able to keep editing projects without constant crashes. I thought I had it fixed with creating a new library and importing all the footage again, but that was only a bandaid and it is back to crashing. This needs to be addressed pronto, I also have edit deadlines that this hiccup is making it difficult to accomplish. Very frustrating from a point update on the OS and not even a full update. Please fix and release another point update on either the OS side or application side, something is not working.

First, this is a user to user forum. To contact Apple file a feedback report. Always good to add another voice.

There is a quite specific cause of the crashing that’s reproducible and has been discussed in a number of threads, and there is also a workaround that will keep the application from crashing until a system solution is found. Of course if that’s not the problem on your system then we should look at other things.

It’s been about three weeks since the update, and to the best of my knowledge there is no current beta version, which is unusual. Hopefully a solution can be found.

@jason9m9 It appears that something in macOS 13.2 is affecting the ProApps. A possible FCP workaround is to reduce the number of clips in an event to less than 300.

Also, we're all FCP users here, just like you, so if you want to tell Apple about your experience and to fix whatever happened with macOS 13.2, use Final Cut Pro->Provide Feedback...

Thank you for letting me know about this workaround. And thank you for letting me know where to go to provide Apple some feedback for hopefully getting this fixed. I honestly have not had something quite this bad happen in FCP in all the years I've used, certainly have been glitches here and there, but this is making finishing this project almost undoable. I was not even really sure where to go for an answer or just hopelessly waiting for an update. Just happy to know others are experiencing the issue and figuring out the workarounds for now.

@jason9m9 Please post details (FCP version, macOS version, number of clips inside each event, etc.) and let us know if reducing the number of clips in an event works.

Yes, we're very lucky that FCP has generally been very stable with few show-stoppers over the years. Especially since you pay for it just once instead of a monthly or annual subscription.
