IOS 16.3 update messed up my settings in mail

After updating to IOS 16.3 I no longer can swipe left to delete all.y messages. It wants to now archive them. Once in a while depending on the email it will give me the option to delete swiping left. I went into mail settings but no option to delete swiping right or left. This needs to be fixed! I don't want to archive my emails!

Hello FFEMTP22,

To clarify, do you have more than one email account set up in the Mail app? If so, does this issue occur for a specific account?

We ask this because, depending on the type of email account you have, you might see Archive instead of Trash when you try to delete emails. However, you should be able to edit where your deleted messages go in your Mail settings. Here's how:

"Set Trash or Archive as your default option

  1. In the Settings app, tap Mail.
  2. Tap Accounts.
  3. Tap your account.
  4. Tap your account once more.
  5. Tap Advanced.
  6. Select Deleted Mailbox or Archive Mailbox to send discarded messages there.

Swipe to delete and other ways to discard one email

  • Swipe left quickly over a single email.
  • Touch and hold an email from your Inbox, then tap Trash Message from the menu.
  • Tap the Archive button  or the Trash button from within an email.

You can also use the steps to delete multiple emails to delete a single email."

Let us know if this helps.

Cheers.

I had same problem with a gmail account.

after selected delete and saving the setting under the individual gmail acct swipe left now deletes the messages sent to that acct instead of archiving them.

the new mail settings discussed actually pertain to message lists. Swipe options for Individual messages are governed within the advanced settings for each individual email account.

thanks for the detailed instructions on how to find those settings.

Thank you for your suggestions. I have always had 2 Gmail accounts & set up the way I described. Since the update my settings were changed by the update. Now those options are not available. The weired thing about it that the same account will have delete option then some archive for others. Same email account so I don't understand why this happens

Hey FFEMTP22,

Thanks for responding back. Just to confirm, when you say the options are not available, do you mean when you select the settings we provided above (Settings > Mail > Accounts > [your account] > [your account again] > Advanced), you are not seeing the option to select Deleted Mailbox here? This will make sure we understand exactly what you meant by the last message you sent.

Cheers.
