Documents and Desktop folder not available after turning iCloud off

I turned iCloud off and the Documents and Desktop folders were moved to an iCloud archive in my user folder. A expected.

But I cannot move them out of the archive to top level of user folder. It says those names are reserved (which make sense). The reserved Documents folder is there, when I make invisible files visible, but seems to think it is on iCloud.

I would like to get the archived Documents and Desktop folders back where they belong.

Am running latest version of Ventura.

Any suggests welcome.

If you turned off iCloud for Documents and Desktop, it created the Archive ICloud file on home drive , ICloud shows no documents on it.

It will prompt the items from this desktop and the documents folder are available in iCloud Drive , to remove items from iCloud Drive , move them to your desktop and documents folder on this Mac , click on show in finder .

Again open system preferences > iCloud > iCloud Drive > the box of desktops and documents box is unchecked , tap over the box to get it rechecked , a circle rotates setting up the box gets checked .

You will notice a folder is created literally on the desktop , tap it a pop up window appears the items on this desktop on this Mac have been moved into a new folder called “ Desktops - Apples Mac book …( the name of Mac will be written in the existing desktop folder in iCloud Drive , you can combine the contents of these folders any time , click on show in finder .

Right click on the folder created on the Mac and move to trash , restart the Mac and empty the trash , but again the documents are placed in a right place in iCloud Drive as well in iCloud server .

Get file, folder and disk information on Mac - Apple Support

By unchecking the box of desktops and documents - the files and documents created are invisible temporarily both in iCloud Drive and www.icloud.com but they are not deleted from the server and still occupying the space , you can check the box.

Hey there!

Good question!

So what you’d want to do is move all the contents of:

Home folder > iCloud Drive (Archive) > Desktop and / or Documents to their original locations:

Home Folder > Desktop and Documents.

If trying time move the entire Desktop and / or Documents folder into the Home folder, it won’t allow for it as those are created by the OS.

So you should be able to open the iCloud Archive Desktop folder, Edit > Select All, and dead or copy / paste the contents into their original locations. Same as iCloud Archive Documents.

You can also use Finder > File > New Finder Window to help with the process.

Hope that helps!

Could you take a screen shot of this?

Finder > File > New Finder Window > Go > Home?

And also Finder > Settings > Sidebar?

Likewise, do you ever use Dropbox to backup your Desktop and Documents? If so those directories can be affected.

So it sounds like Desktop and Documents ONLY appear when un-hiding the files?

If that’s the case, can you also share the Get Info window for those folders? And/or tell us the file path it shows for them?

It May just be iCloud Drive > Desktop and Documents May need to be enabled, then fully turned off again.

It could also be the Finder p.list needs to be reset, I guess it depends, thanks!
