SuperDrive does not connect with 2021 24-inch iMac
Step by step:
Frustration here. My former iMac had reached age of being unable to be up-dated. I recently bought new 2021 24-inch iMac Ventura.
Got it set up. Moved much used and needed SuperDrive from old iMac. Discovered no USB port on new machine. Drove to local business and purchased their recommended “j5create Pro USB4 Hub.” Doesn’t work.
Tested SuperDrive on old iMac. Still works; not the problem.
Went back to electronic retailer, bought “Insignia 4-Port USB-C Hub.” Try it using USB-3 port on iMac. Try it using USB-4 port on iMac. Does not work. SuperDrive emits very slight “start up noise” when connected, but it will not accept a disc. - - The disc cannot be fully inserted and immediately is forcefully kicked out. (While notice appears on screen, “USB Accessory Needs Power Connect ‘Apple USB…’ to a USB port on this Mac.” - - Note: it was connected)
There is precious little information online regarding compatibility of SuperDrive with iMac machines and various OS. However, online one line owner’s manual for SuperDrive does not list 2021 iMac in list of compatible machines. And there is no owner’s manual for the iMac with the machine or online, just an online repair manual. “Getting started . . . “ etc. of very limited use.
Okay, we will assume that 2021 iMac machine or new Ventura OS require a new and different SuperDrive. Presumably redesigned for new chip and OS. So, off to drive to retailer again and purchase a new SuperDrive. Get home and decide to do more research for breaking the new package.
Guess what!!! Magnifying glass discovery that old SuperDrive is Model No. A1379 and the unopened box label with new SuperDrive is Model No. A1379. No redesign of drive.
So. . . what is going on here???? Why will the SuperDrive not accept a disc when connected to the 2021 24inch iMac Ventura????? Any help out there, please?
Yes, rather frustrated, to say the least. Again, apparent lack of information from Apple seems very, very unlike the reputation of Apple and is extremely frustrating.
