My iPad Air 5 won't go to sleep and turns on and off weirdly in Magic Keyboard.

Dear Apple Community,

Since iPadOS 16, I discovered some weird behaviour on my iPad.

  1. My iPad won't sleep
  2. When I close my Magic Keyboard, the iPad constantly turns on and off.

  • iPad Air (5. gen, WiFi) runs iPadOS 16.3
  • AutoLock is set to 2 Minutes in Settings
  • Guided Access and Assistive Touch are turned off
  • Lock/Unlock is set to true
  • I am using a 3rd party thin high-end tempered glass screen protector
  • the iPad doesn't have any noticeable physical damages besides from a few scratches in the aluminum edges (caused by a wrong hard-plastic case); I never dropped it
  • I recovered my iPad a month ago
  • I reset the iPad recently
  • today I reset all the settings

Additional facts for 1.:

  • doesn't matter whether its charging or not
  • doesn't matter in which case it is (Magic Keyboard, Smart Folio, 3rd Party clear case without cover)

Additional facts for 2.:

  • When I close my Smart Folio, the iPad's display doesn't turn on and off every second

Maybe you can help me fixing my problem :)

Have a nice day!

Thanks for clarifying this for us, _Dagobert_Duck,

What do you have set for Auto-Lock in Settings > Display & Brightness?

Does it make a difference if you change the time until your iPad locks?

You can learn more about adjusting Auto-Lock here: Set a passcode on iPad - Apple Support

"Change when iPad automatically locks

Go to Settings  > Display & Brightness > Auto-Lock, then set a length of time.

The Auto-Lock screen, with settings for the length of time before iPad automatically locks."

Cheers!

Good day to you _Dagobert_Duck,

We have a couple questions that are going to help us isolate and offer some focused troubleshooting. When you press the Sleep/Wake button to put your iPad to sleep, what happens? Does the iPad display stay on, does it go off and come right back on, does your iPad lock or does something entirely different happen?

As your iPad is powering on and off, while the Magic Keyboard is connected, are you seeing an Apple logo or a spinning gear?

Thanks.

Hello AnnieL2,

thanks a lot for helping me with my problem.

When I press the sleep/wake button, my iPad goes to sleep normally (when I use it without a case or the case is open), it simply doesn't sleep automatically. To prevent some misunderstandings: My iPad doesn't turn off, it just sleeps and wakes every second when I close my Magic Keyboard, when I said "turned on and off" I meant the iPad's display, not the iPad itself, sorry for the wrong wording.

Best regards

Hey Jeff_W.,

I contacted the Apple Support. They didn't have a fix for this (But don't get me wrong - The Apple Support is great and in 99% of the cases they've a solution) - that's why I started this discussion hoping that anyone here has an idea how to fix my problem.

The Support employee also offered me to contact a senior member of their team - which I'll do in the next days.

I appreciate the advice and the attempts to help me with my awkward problem from all of you, thank you so much for that!

Have a great day, cheers!
