Error uploading RAW image using Photos following an edit

I found a solution that worked for me regarding the little cloud that appears bottom right of a RAW image after it is edited in Photos on Mac. The text of the cloud relates to "photo could not be uploaded" or similar. I have icloud switched on.

It only relates to edited photos and these would appear as a low resolution (blurry) image being in the photo library, and only when you hit edit would it appear at correct resolution without being blurry.

I tried all the other solutions apple suggested to no avail - safe mode, restarts etc.

Without knowing the cause, (wifi strength?) I fixed the problem by the following:

  1. Open RAW image
  2. Hit the "revert to original button"
  3. Hit the "done" button.
  4. Error cloud has now disappeared.
  5. Open image and repeat the edits again
  6. Error cloud indicating upload error did not reappear this time

Could this be a wifi strength issue when the original edit was done and then it held the error?

You did not mention how much free storage is available on your Mac. It could be a problem of lack of local storage. Edited photos will appear as blurry, if your Mac does not have enough free storage to keep a high resolution preview of your photo stored locally, or even a high resolution thumbnail. Then Photos needs to download the original to render the edited version, and if the network is slow, you will be stuck with the blurry version while waiting for the download to happen. If your Mac does not have much free storage, downloading the high resolution original may fail.

Could it be a problem of lack of local storage? Even with iCloud Photos, we have to try to to keep the library small enough, so at least the optimized versions will fit locally on our Mac and the Mac can keep high resolution previews of the edited versions we are currently working with stored locally.

Hi léonie,

thanks for responding - below is the HD storage and settings.

Running on Ventura 13.2.

162GB of 250GB used

8GB Memory

As i said previously, "revert to original" and then "done" seemed to make the upload error cloud disappear. I then re-edited and problem seemed fixed.

Rebooting and starting again in safe mode as recommended by Apple support did not work.

It worked for me on a different wifi network which is why i thought it might be related to the wifi juice?
