Ventura 13.2 very slow and unresponsive

I'm finding everything is slow to unresponsive since updating. Safari 16.3 takes a minute to load a page, changing between applications or open documents takes a minute or more, some apps I have to force quit, wireless mouse lags and works unpredictably. Has anyone got suggestions or similar experiences? I've just upgraded from a 2009 iMac and gone backwards. Any help gratefully received

iMac, OS X 10.11

Hello Ozzie Rick,

This page can help out with providing assistance for issues where the Mac is running slower than expected: If your Mac runs slowly - Apple Support

•Your computer’s startup disk may not have enough free disk space. To make disk space available, you can move files to another disk or an external storage device, then delete files you no longer need on the startup disk. macOS can also help you optimize storage by storing files in the cloud and helping you identify files you no longer need. Choose Apple menu  > System Settings, then click General in the sidebar (you may need to scroll down). Click Storage on the right, then click the storage recommendations you want to use.
•An app you’re using may require more memory than your Mac has easily available. You can use •Activity Monitor to see how much memory your Mac and apps are using. See View memory usage in Activity Monitor. Also see the documentation that came with the app to find out its system requirements.
Quit any app that isn’t compatible with your Mac. For example, an app may require a different processor or graphics card. See the documentation that came with the app for information about its system requirements.
•To see what processor your computer has, choose Apple menu  > System Settings, click General  in the sidebar, then click About on the right.
•To see which graphics card your computer has, choose Apple menu  > System Settings, then click General  in the sidebar. Click About on the right, then click System Report. Click Graphics/Displays to see the name of the graphics card installed your computer.
•Quit any apps you’re not using.
If you have problems with your disk, use Disk Utility to verify and try and fix any issues.

In some cases it may help to try a quick restart of the Mac to give it a refresh: Shut down or restart your Mac - Apple Support

Cheers.

Thank you for the helpful reply Eric. I can't find a way to update my profile information but I am not running Mac X.10. I have upgraded to a 2019 iMac running Ventura 13.2. I've had a look at Storage as per your suggestion and 2 things stand out as peculiar. Applications are 256.78gb and System Data is 133.2gb. These seem inordinately high. I have imported all my files from my old iMac, I'm beginning to think that is a mistake. Perhaps I should offload all but essential data? Many thanks

Absolutely, same experience. Half of the pages I visit with Safari take a loooong time to load. It's like dial-up speed. I've called Apple support twice and they swear there is "no known issue." Everything on my iMac is up-to-date, plenty of available disk space, etc. I've noticed a few other issues: for some reason no app can access the Times font — it substitutes Times New Roman, which is a different font. Again, Apple support says "no known issue."
