How do I get my downloads to expand up with most recent downloads after re-adding it to the doc?

I accidentally dragged my downloads off my doc and they disappeared. I re-added it by dragging the downloads folder from finder into the doc, but now when I click on it a preview of everything in my downloads pops up. I liked the original view where it elongated to show the most recent downloads, now it's impossible to find anything since the download preview shows everything and is in alphabetical order.

How do I get the downloads to expand from my doc with just the recent downloads like it used to?

Control-click the Downloads icon that is in the dock. In the resulting pop-up window, select View Contents As > List.

Then click (not control-click) the Downloads icon again and you will see your downloaded files as a list. At the bottom of the list click Options and in that pop-up window select Sort by > Date Created.

That is very helpful, thank you!

Now is there a way to make it show just the 10 or so most recent downloads with the preview image like it used to? The most recent download appears all the way at the top (so I have to scroll through all the old downloads) and it won't let me drag an item out of the list like it used to.

What you are looking for is the "Fan" option ... when you click on Downloads in your dock when it is Fan option it gives you a stack of your last nine files, plus an option at the top to view "More in Finder."

To select Fan mode, Option-click on your Downloads stack or folder in the dock, and select Fan under the words "View content as".

the invocation is not correct and the choices are not correct either. Please test and post an updated procedure.
