Hotmail (exchange) in MacOS Mail app doesn't sync

I have unusual Hotmail behaviour. The biggest problem is that my Hotmail account on my Macbook (using Apple/MacOS Mail) doesn't sync the read emails. So if I read an email on my iPhone or using the browser portal, it still shows as unread on my Mac.

However if I read it on my Mac, it syncs in the other direction, showing it as read online and on my iPhone.

If I delete and re-add the Hotmail (as an Exchange account), those emails are now properly shown as read. However, the same problem exists moving forward: emails read on my phone/online still appear as unread on my Mac.

Very frustrating, because now I don't know which emails I have actually read when I look on my Mac! Any help is appreciated.

Hi gnowk,

Thanks for coming to Apple Support Communities for help today. This article shows you how to set up an Exchange account on your iPhone: Set up Exchange ActiveSync on your iPhone or iPad - Apple Support

Also, make sure the account on your Mac is also using the Exchange servers: Add email accounts in Mail on Mac - Apple Support. If it was initially set up as a Hotmail account instead of Exchange, you’ll want to remove it and add it back as an Exchange account: Remove email accounts in Mail on Mac - Apple Support

If it’s still not syncing as expected and, since this is an Exchange account, we'd advise contacting your Exchange Administrator for a solution.

Have a fantastic day!
