I have a 2020 M1 MacMini with 16Gb Ram and a 512Gb SSD. This is definitely not a the low end one.
I checked out the new Mini and put in my current Mini to see how much it might be worth for trading in. $90!!! Seriously?? A basically 2 year old computer that I paid a fair amount of money for.
What gives with this?

Yes. I know I can always get more by selling privately. The point I'm trying to make is that Apple is not giving fair trade-in values on items. Not even close. I would say $300 would be a fair trade-in value. $90 isn't even close. Either Apple just wants to cover the costs of shipping and recycling, or they are trying to discourage people from trading items in and then needing to deal with those items.

Okay. I have figured out what is going on here. I'm in Canada and on the Apple Canada site, they are giving me a $90 trade-in. If I go to the US site, they give me $330 for it. Definitely something wrong on the Canada site.
Check the local listings, you should be able to get $500 - $700 by selling it to a private party.
Even > https://everymac.com/systems/apple/mac_mini/specs/mac-mini-m1-8-core-2020-specs.html says it is worth $600 -$800 depending on the spec’s.
Also make sure that it is properly prepare it for resale.

Think that’s bad? I purchased a base model 2019 Mac Pro for $6k and it’s trade in is $1k
When I traded in my 16" MBP (i9 1tb 16gb) towards my 14" MBP (M1-Pro 10-core 1tb 32gb) they gave me $1800cdn. I was very impressed. Now when I checked how much I'd get with my current (1 year old) M1-PRO that was nearly $4k... $560. I was kinda stunned - I can easily sell it used for $2k.
den.thed is right. I live near two universities and I’ve been posting my used Macs for sale in their student union bulletin boards. When someone shows interest I meed them on campus at the library or student union which is safe for both of us. In the old days I’d accept cash or money order, these days I use online payment. I’ve almost always sold the computer within 2 weeks for a price that was fair for me and the student buying it.

I think that could possibly be an error if you did it with the online tool or you entered the serial number incorrectly.
I would double check that it was done properly.
If it still giving you the same, I would contact Apple directly as I would expect the trade to be around 33-37% of the original price (my M1 MacBook Air was ~37% of original).
As Woodmeister says, I think there was a mistake made somewhere. I have same configuration except for a 1 Tb SSD. Both online and using Apple site tool Trade-in allowance was $390.
I have the same-spec'ed Mac Mini (M1, 16GB/512GB), and I also get $90 using the online trade-in tool with my serial number...
I have the basic M1 8GB 256SSD mini. Apple website says 270 dollars.
Bestbuy says only 180 dollars.
I have the same M1 Mini configuration and my trade-in value on a loaded M2 mini pro was put at $300.
That’s actually much better. You’re getting about 16% of the purchase price whereas we are being offered 5.6% 😂 In any case I sold mine privately since this, for $850 CAD.
