Hello CLPWag,
Thanks for using Apple Support Communities! We want to be sure we're on the same page. Are you being asked to enter your password instead of using Touch ID or is your fingerprint missing from Touch ID settings completely and you need to set it up again?
If you're being asked for your password, there are situations where this is normal. When updates install, your Mac restarts so it would require the password instead of accepting Touch ID. The list can be found in the guide you recently viewed under "If you need to enter your password". Here's that link and the list, just in case: If Touch ID isn't working on your Mac - Apple Support
If you need to enter your password
The first time you log in after you turn on, restart, or log out of your Mac, you must log in by entering your password manually. After that, you can use Touch ID to log in.
Additionally, you might need to enter your password instead of using Touch ID in these situations:
• Your fingerprint isn't recognized five times in a row
• You haven't unlocked your device in more than 48 hours
• You're trying to change settings in the Touch ID pane of System Preferences
Keep us posted.
Take care!
