HomePod mini not connecting to airplay

Help! I have had a home pod for a few months, it was working fine and I usually airplay BBC radio Sounds app and Spotify through it. However recently when I try to press airplay, I get no response (I can't even select airplay, let alone attempt to connect) and it wont seem to work except to talk to Siri or play my Apple Music library. I have tried resetting and removing device, it might work for a while but the same thing will happen. I am getting so frustrated - beginning to think this was a waste of money and that other devices might be more user friendly. I would appreciate any help!

Knowing that resetting and removing the device provides a temporary resolution, greatly helps with guiding us through troubleshooting. In addition to those steps, have you verified the HomePod mini is updated to the latest version? If not, updating is a great step that can help with resolving many issues. You can find the steps for updating listed below and outlined in the following article.


  1. "Make sure that your device is updated to the latest version of iOS, iPadOS, or macOS
  2. Open the Home app. 
  3. Tap or click the More button , then Home Settings  > Software Update.
  4. If there's a new update, select Update. If there isn't a new update, you can select HomePod to turn on automatic updates and get the latest software automatically when it's available. Software Update also tells you if your HomePod is already up to date, and shows you the installed HomePod software."

Thanks for providing those additional details.


Going forward, when you say that you removed and reset the HomePod, are you restarting it with the steps shown here, If HomePod mini or HomePod isn't responding under the "Restart HomePod mini or HomePod" section, or are you resetting the HomePod with the steps in this next link here: Reset HomePod - Apple Support


If the issue persists after resetting the HomePod, the next best option would be to reach out to Apple Support directly from this link here: Get Support - Apple


From that link you'll want to select Choose a product > HomePod > Internet & Streaming > Using AirPlay. From there select Continue, and you should see a couple options to reach out, depending on your location.

Hello, I was removing/resetting via the app (1st link). This time I have reset via the 2nd link - switching off and doing a manual reset. I still cannot link the device via airplay from my phone, however it did work this time when I had the music streaming and then bought my phone close to the HomePod. This method has not worked in the past.

do you think it might be an issue with my phone? it is a pro 14 Max and the software is up to date.
