iPhone asks to scan my credit card not autofill

Since Updating to iOS 16.1.2 and buying new iPhone SE even though I have auto fill set up for my credit card, and yes I’ve checked this a few times now, iPhone still asks me to scan my credit card, not autofill. I don’t want to scan my credit card. I have a sneaking suspicion I’m being pushed to pay by ApplePay and when that’s not available to scan. If Apple Pay isn’t an option I need autofill. I thought the whole point of having your card on your phone is that you don’t physically need your credit card with your.
