I have read solutions to this problem, but nothing seems to work. I want to format the entire disk, but it shows up as two separate disks in Disk Utility. Apparently, the drive has no name and/or isn't recognized as a single entity/physical drive. How do I get DU to see it as an external drive with 2 partitions rather than 2 separate drives?

Did you set "View > Show all devices" in Disk Utility and then erase the whole device (not just volumes under it) as APFS (SSD) or Mac OS Extended, Journaled (HDD)?

Thank you so much, Matti! It worked. Bingo! Your answer was very helpful. It's good to know about the View options. This not only formatted the disk; it also merged the two partitions into one. Just what I was trying to do.
