iPhone 14 Pro missed calls not showing in Recent calls when phone is on Airplane mode

Whenever I set my phone to Airplane mode missed calls do not show up in my list of Recent calls or Missed calls. I will get a text saying someone phoned but didn't leave a number. How do I fix my phone to make sure all missed calls show up in Recent calls? At the moment, I know I've missed calls but not who they were from! Thanks

Update on this. I just turned the sound off today using the switch on the side, rather than putting the phone into Airplane mode. However, when someone called me during that time the missed call still didn't show up in my Missed Calls list - I just got a text saying I'd missed a call but the person hadn't left a message (which actually they had done even though I didn't get notified of the voicemail - just had a red badge on the Phone app with no number inside the badge).

I was in a basement gym when I missed the call, and so there may not be any phone signal down there. Is it the case that iPhone doesn't register any missed calls when there is no phone signal (regardless of whether the phone is in Airplane mode or out of mobile signal range)?

Hey there HGHF1,

Thanks for reaching out to the Apple Support Communities.

To get started, we do want to let you know that it would be expected behavior for phone calls to not appear in the recently called list while the iPhone is in Airplane Mode. This is because while the phone is in Airplane Mode, your iPhone would not be connected to a cellular network so the calls would not be able to reach your device.

We hope that's able to help.

Regards.

Thanks, Chris. That is surprising to me. We have to use Airplane mode so often these days, and I would have expected that notification of missed calls (and the phone numbers of the missed calls) would be sent to the phone as soon as Airplane mode is switched off. I find that often people don't bother leaving a voicemail since they assume that the person they are calling will see the missed call and will phone them back - which is not possible if the missed call numbers don't show up in Missed Calls!

Perhaps the phone number of the missed call could at least be sent in the text notification that I receive when I turn off Airplane mode and have missed a call?

The phone can’t register a missed call if it has no service (airplane mode, powered off or in a dead zone).

A “Missed Call” is a call that reached the phone but was not answered. In this case, the call never reached the phone at all.

There is no way to change this since the cellular network does not notify the device that a call came in while offline when the phone returns to service.
