Problem with HDMI Adapter & ipad charging

Hi All,

I am using an ipad (9th gen) with a Karaoke app that I want to also display on a large 65" screen.

So I have an HDMI adapter out of the ipad so I can charge at the same time. The HDMI is then connected to the screen.

Everything works fine for 3-4 weeks, but then something seems to go wrong with the adapter and the ipad will only charge when the 65" screen is powered up and not in standby. If the 65" screen isn't on the ipad doesn't charge.

The user has to bypass the adapter to charge if they don't want the screen on which isn't very easy for them.

If I buy a new HDMI adapter again everything is fine for 3-4 weeks then the same problem.

The screen I have is a commercial one and does not have Airplay.

Does anybody have any experience of this?

Thank you!

iPad, iPadOS 15

Good afternoon Maria_Lighting,

We would recommend contacting the company that installed the TV and hardware to have them make recommendations regarding the issues you are having.

Alternatively, purchasing the Apple TV 4K and Belkin UltraHD High Speed 4K HDMI Cable and using AirPlay to wirelessly send audio and video from your iPad via Wi-Fi to your TV may be the better setup. You have fourteen days to return the purchase if this does not work for you.

Take care.

Hello Maria_Lighting,

To confirm, does the adapter you're using have an additional Lightning connector? If so, to help isolate the behavior a bit more, we'd recommend testing a different Lightning cable to see if the results are different. You'll want to be sure that the adapter you're using, and the cable is a certified accessory as well. Identify counterfeit or uncertified Lightning connector accessories provides more information about this.

"If you use a counterfeit or uncertified Lightning accessory, you could see these issues:

  • Your iOS device could become damaged
  • The cable might be easily damaged
  • The connector end might fall off, get very hot, or might not fit properly into your device
  • You might not be able to sync or charge your device"

Cheers!

Hello Maria_Lighting,

It sounds like this is an issue with the adaptor, or yes, the TV is causing something. "Everything works fine for 3-4 weeks, but then something seems to go wrong with the adapter and the ipad will only charge when the 65" screen is powered up and not in standby. If the 65" screen isn't on the ipad doesn't charge."

We know it's not the iPad because when you get a new adaptor, it functions properly. If the TV is pushing more power than the adaptor can handle, it is shorting it out. This is merely speculation, as again, the only thing we know for sure is the iPad charges properly with a new adaptor. So nothing seems to be incorrect with the hardware functions of the iPad. Testing with a new officially supported adaptor from Apple may make all the difference, as you mention there is still a part not officially recognized by Apple: Identify counterfeit or uncertified Lightning connector accessories - Apple Support

"The only item which is not genuine Apple is a lightning extension lead which goes from the adapter up through the support post of a Bouncepad stand and in to the lightning socket of the ipad. I had to do it this way because I can't get the HDMI adapter and a connected HDMI cable inside the Bouncepad and still fix the cover in place."

You can try purchasing an Apple TV, to see if the Karaoke app will stream without the cables, or if it's available on Apple TV, avoiding the iPhone altogether.

Thanks.

Hi,

Thanks for your reply. The adapter I'm using is the genuine Apple HDMI adapter which also has a lightning connector on it. I'm using the supplied charger and cable in to the adpater for charging. (Though I've also tried a higher wattage charger but no change to the issue). The only item which is not genuine Apple is a lightning extension lead which goes from the adapter up through the support post of a Bouncepad stand and in to the lightning socket of the ipad. I had to do it this way because I can't get the HDMI adapter and a connected HDMI cable inside the Bouncepad and still fix the cover in place.

It feels like my only solution is to buy an Airplay receiver and cut out the HDMI adpater? I'm pretty disappointed that this is so complicated!

Hi,

This equipment is in a commercial installation over 1 hours drive away. I can't just go there and swap things out and I certainly can't exchange the TV for another!!!

I can't believe that I am the first person to have this issue?

Can someone at least tell me if it is possible to use the HDMI adapter permanently in this way? I can't understand what is inside the adapter that is failing?
