keynote: show / hide "guides" on slides

Keynote 9.1; MacPro 2012; Mohave (yeah, old stuff, I have to work with what I've got)

Working in Keynote, I went looking for a grid type overlay to align text elements on a single slide, a bit like what I've used in Photoshop and Lightroom for example but here for a different purpose.

What I found sounded potentially useful: "show guides" from the View menu.

It wasn't.

That added two thin horizontal lines (in yellow) on every slide as they appear in the main slide window. Trying to reverse what I had just done, I returned to the view menu and clicked "clear all guides". But nothing changed, and that makes no sense to me.

When I create a new slide from the slide menu, the lines appear there now also.

Fortunately, these horizontal lines don't appear on the images when I run the slide show, so it's not critical to my final result, but I'd prefer to be able to remove these lines.

I must be missing something. Can anyone explain this puzzle so that I can dispense with these lines?

I would be most grateful for any help.

Mac Pro, OS X 10.11

1 - create a grid

show the ruler [View > Show ruler]

then drag down from either the top or side ruler to add individual guides on to the slide:

as this takes a bit of time, you can save this slide and others like it in a separate presentation and copy over the slide when required for future use

2 - Clear Guides on Master slide

go to:

View > Edit Master Slides

View > Guides > Clear all Guides

View > Exit Master Slides

3 - Clear Guides on slide

go to:

View > Guides > Clear all Guides

Gary, thank you very much for your reply.

Unfortunately, what you suggested (view>guides>clear all guides) is exactly what I had done before I posted my question. And as I wrote, that changed nothing.

I have tried that again, but without success. I'm still at square one.

This problem has no significant consequences to my actual live presentation since the guides to not appear when I run the slide show, but the lines are a little distracting. They still appear on every one of my existing slides.

So there's no reason to move heaven and earth to "fix" this, and no reason to re-create the entire slide show to eliminate those lines. But if there's a simple solution (or just an explanation for why / how it happened) I'll be glad to have this little blip resolved.

FWIW.....when I create a "new" keynote document and add a new slide, there are No guides. Is that any clue?
