Mac Studio closing unexpectedly

Mac Studio

Apple M1 Ultra

64 GB

OS Ventura 13.1

Connected devices

Apple Studio Display

Ethernet cable

Apple wireless keyboard

Apple wireless mouse

My Mac Studio was new in October 2022.

To begin with I had no issues, however recently I have found that about once a day the monitor screen goes blank (when in use) and the Mac Studio closes down a few seconds later.

I've already been helped on the monitor support community, and have have been advised that the monitor is correctly configured.

This behaviour can happen at different times. Most often when printing or processing photographs, however it also happens when my photo processing software is turned off and when the machine is idle.

I've also had the behaviour after starting the device, between entering my password and starting work.

Any suggestions would be very much appreciated

Thank you.

That's not especially useful for this kind of debugging. Lets try a completely different aprroach.

Download and run this little "discovery" utility, Etrecheck. It was developed by a senior contributor on the forums. It fixes nothing. Its sole purpose is to produce a report that is pre-laundered of personally-identifiable information motion and can be freely posted back to the forums.

Kernel Panic Reports are stored at:

/Library/Logs/DiagnosticReports

If you copy and paste that string into:

Finder > Go menu > Go to Folder

it will take you to where those reports are stored.

They are named with Date&Time and start or end in ‘panic’

If you find one, please post the entire report here, by using the “additional text” Icon in the reply footer (looks like a paper with writing).

Please don’t post more about 20 lines of any other types of reports — they are interminable, and any information useful for this purpose is on the first screenful.

Hi again

The MacStudio just shut down again. I had only just started it up a few moments ago and was selecting music on Spottify.

Checked the Diagnostic Reports and there is still no panic report only core_analytics

Hope this helps

your report is complex, and the problem you are facing is elusive. But I do see a few things that suggest what might be happening.

I think your Mac is too heavily tied in to stuff on the Web, and it is not so much crashing as being overloaded and swamped by trying to keep up with all the web connections you have made. I think your web connections are getting overwhelmed. It is possible that if you simply walked away, it might recover after a while. But I have no way to know how long that might take.

I think that, to recover your ability to use this system the way you want, you will need to add some LOCAL disk drives to possibly hold some work files and definitely hold all your backups.

I can go through the report and make suggestions about individual items, but I think the best overall advice is to get off the web for all but sending files to associates.

"On the cloud" is great for sharing photos, but is not a viable backup solution for everything you have. The stuff is not under your control, and is subject to sloppy handling, arbitrary changes in policy, theft, data loss [are they making frequent backups using best practices?], and bankruptcy of the company that holds it. It can easily take three days to restore it at ordinary Internet speeds.

If you do not have a recent local, disk-based backup, your computer is like a ticking Time bomb. You are only one disk failure away from losing EVERYTHING! Drives do not last forever. It is not a question of IF it will fail, only WHEN it will fail.
