No keyboard on applewatch?

first time owner of apple watch. Got ultra a few days ago. Reading online there should be a qwerty-keyboard on the actual watch, but this is not showing at any time during messaging or other apps where I should be able to write. It only starts dictating/recording. There is no option anywhere to drag from the bottom of screen to access either. Help?

Apple Watch, watchOS 4

For the Ultra, the Side Button is opposite the Crown, but the process should be the same. Press them both until the  appears.

In the Messages app on the watch, tap Create Message. Tap Create Message again and a keyboard slides up from the bottom.

At the same time, my nearby iPhone offered to let me use the iPhone's keyboard as well.
