I want to move my Photos file from my mid-2012 MacBook Pro to an external hard drive. I understand there are issues with External Hard Drives
being recognized.

usually when we see issues with external drives being not recognized, it is because the end user is using bundled software on the drive that supposedly makes the drive "Mac ready". it is recommended that the drive be erased and reformatted before being placed into service to remove any such software.
