Finder on Mac OS is not locating my entire music library to sync to an old iPod / old iPhone

Hello! I am trying to sync music to both an old iPod touch and an old iPhone 4 to throw in the car - set it and forget it.

Because they are older devices, they no longer sync through the 'new' Apple Music desktop app. You have to use Finder, device and when you click on the device, you can sync files to that old device through that finder window.

However, the "music library" that the finder window is finding only has 17 songs and 6 artists. My entire Music Library is about 256 GB large - so much more than 17 songs.

How can I get finder to correctly "see" my full library so I can transfer songs to my old iPod an iPhone devices.

Is there some type of plist file or something else I need to delete or erase so that finder can locate the correct library? Thanks in advance!!!

Finder can only sync locally stored media, that doesn't come from the Apple Music service. You would appear to only have six artists that have some qualifying content. Try holding down option+cmd as you launch Music to open Music in its safe mode, which may rebuild some internal indexes. You might also try hold option as launch Music and then explicitly reselect your active Music Library.musiclibrary database. This is the library that Finder should then offer content from.

Thank you turingtest2! I had to let the Apple Music app rebuild the whole library. After I did both actions you suggested, I went to Apple Music and found that the songs couldn't be "located". Once I told it where to find one file, it automatically found all the rest. Afterwards, when I connected my old iPhone, Finder "found" all artists and song files. Took some time because my library is fairly large - but it worked. Kudos to you!!! Thanks!!

Hello Josue.Alvarez,

Thanks for choosing the Apple Support Communities. It sounds like you may need to locate and link your iTunes Library to Finder. Let's try these steps to successfully locate and link your music files.

Change where your music files are stored on Mac - Apple Support

Of course we are not changing the location, but this article will give you the menu options to locate and link the files.

After that, you will want to sync your music using this resource.

Use the Finder to sync your iPhone, iPad, or iPod with your computer - Apple Support

"Sync or remove content using the Finder

  1. Open a Finder window and connect your device to your computer using a USB cable. Learn what to do if you don't see your device listed in Finder.
  2. After your device appears in the sidebar of the Finder window, click the device to select it.
  3. If prompted, trust your device. You might be asked to update to the latest version of iOS or iPadOS.
  4. Select the type of content that you want to sync or remove from the horizontal list. To turn syncing on for a content type, select the checkbox next to “Sync [content] onto [user’s] iPhone.” More syncing options will now be available.
  5. Select the checkbox next to each item that you want to sync.
  6. A Finder window shows the options for syncing music with a connected iPhone

  7. Click the Apply button in the lower-right corner of the window. If syncing doesn't start automatically, click the Sync button. You may also be prompted to authorize your computer to complete the sync.

* You can only sync your device with one Apple Music or Apple TV library at a time. If you see a message that your device is synced with another Apple Music or Apple TV library, your device was previously connected to another computer. If you click "Erase and Sync" in that message, all content of the selected type on your device will be erased and replaced with content from this computer."
