Disappearing desktop folder when updating to Ventura, where did they go

Okay, I just upgraded to Ventura (13.1) and had the problem that all my desktop folders had disappeared. The finder had them but I had difficulty transferring them to the desktop. Where are they and how to retrieve them?

update: after researching, I found them, with their icons in my trash. If this happens to you, do delete your trash until you pull them back on your desktop.
