Saving a memoji as an avatar

A friend sent my wife a Memoji of herself via iMessage. I suppose the friend made it herself—it looks remarkably like her. My wife wants to save the Memoji so as to replace the avatar now in use in this friend’s Contacts card, but we can’t save it. We tried resting a finger on the image in the message, then tapped More … . All we could do was delete the Memoji—the Forward button was grayed out. What are we missing?

Hello Lucas1948,

It sounds like your wife wants to save a Memoji and then add it as a photo for a contact.

Learn how to use Memojis here: Use Memoji in Messages on iPhone

In iOS 16.2, we're able to save a Memoji by pressing down using our finger on the Memoji.

It prompts us if we'd like to save it.

If your wife isn't running this iOS version, we'd recommend updating the iPhone and then testing this further: Update your iPhone or iPad

Update your iPhone or iPad wirelessly

1. Back up your device using iCloud or your computer.

2. Plug your device into power and connect to the internet with Wi-Fi.

3. Go to Settings > General, then tap Software Update.

4. If you see more than one software update option available, choose the one that you want to install.

The Settings app on iPhone showing options to update to iOS 15.7 or iOS 16.

5. Tap Install Now. If you see Download and Install instead, tap it to download the update, enter your passcode, then tap Install Now. If you don't know your passcode, learn what to do.

Let us know how it goes, take care.

Thanks for the response. My wife’s phone is running iOS 16.2, so that’s not the problem. Just now, I pressed my finger on the Memoji. It expanded to the width of the screen and presents a string of icons above it—heart, thumbs-up/down, Ha-Ha, and so on. Below the Memoji I see Reply and More… . I tap More… and get to choose trash or … nothing. The arrow that I expect to take me to another menu where I might save the Memoji is grayed out.

What you described in your response is exactly what I had expected to find, but it ain’t workin’.
