Why does my computer keep changing its name?

My computer's name constantly changes by adding numbers:

When this happens all sorts of LAN activities fail. I can make it stop by disabling "File Sharing". It seems to defeat the purpose of file sharing when the computer keeps changing it's name so the network can't find it. By the way I searched for solutions and this problem is extremely common and has been for at least ten years. Any explanation?
