External Monitor disconnects when attached to M1 Macbook Pro via usb-c

I have a Macbook pro m1 max with two external monitors. One is connected via usb c and one is connected via hdmi. My Problem: The usb c monitor disconnects when certain software is opened. Very strange. I was using a OWC Thunderbolt dock. Thinking that was the problem, I bypassed the dock. The problem persisted even using no dock. Then, I did find a temporary solution. I can connect the usb c monitor via hdmi instead (with a usb c adapter to connect it the the macbook pro). When using both monitors as hdmi monitors, I have no problems. Perfect... But when using it in this manner, I do lose the usb features of the usb c connection. Any ideas as to why the usb c connection is so flakey? Thanks
