How do I get a still screenshot of a paused video?

I used to be able to pause a video or anything streaming and get a screenshot. (Command Shift 3 or 4). But after I upgraded from Sierra, that function no longer works. The capture just shows a black screen.

That is a feature that I used regularly and would like back.

I've still able to take screenshots of paused local video files and streaming (Youtube0 videos with the Screenshot app with Ventura.

Give this a try: boot into Safe Mode according to How to use safe mode on your Mac and test to see if the problem persists. Reboot normally and test again.

NOTE 1: Safe Mode boot can take up to 3 - 5 minutes as it's doing the following;

• Verifies your startup disk and attempts to repair directory issues, if needed

• Loads only required kernel extensions (prevents 3rd party kernel/extensions from loading)

• Prevents Startup Items and Login Items from opening automatically

• Disables user-installed fonts

• Deletes font caches, kernel cache, and other system cache files

NOTE 2: if you have a wireless keyboard with rechargeable batteries connect it with its charging cable before booting into Safe Mode. This makes it act as a wired keyboard as will insure a successful boot into Safe Mode.

Thanks, Old Toad. I haven't tried Safe Mode yet, but in the meantime I ran a couple more experiments:

I was able to do screenshots of videos in YouTube.

I was able to do screenshots of streaming previews in Netflix and HBO. However, if I selected the video to play (and paused or let it run), then the screenshot was black.

Only black screens came back on Hulu, whether preview or selected to play.

Since selected streaming videos are my prime interest for this, that is what I'm hoping to figure out.

Any thoughts about this irregular response to screenshots and how to get past it?

Welcome.

Appreciate the additional information and adding very specific requirements for your needs or rather wants.

It would appear to me, that this type of setup may require some very specialized piece of Third Party Hardware and software that can be switched on and off at a moments notice

Kind of like a Home Video Surveillance type of setup but only for the Instantaneous and flash second when an idea appears in one mind.

That is beyond my area of expertise

Though, the original question " How do I get a still screenshot of a paused video? " has had some suggestions on how to achieve that specific request

Good Luck with this .
