Activation lock

Thanks, does it have to be the original password used? As I’m not sure which one it was… I keep getting phone locked for security purposes then getting two factor code on other phone to enter a new password, I want to remove Apple ID from old phone to give it to someone, but it is still linked to my husbands Apple ID?
