Smart Playlist Syncs, but None of the Songs Do

Been having this problem for a while now and have no idea what started it.

I have many smart playlists in Music of songs on my computer. Of all the smart playlists I sync to my iPhone 14 Pro Max and iPad Pro 12.9" 2021 model, the same smart playlists sync without the songs. That is, I see the playlists in my devices, but they are completely empty.

Removing these playlists and resyncing does not fix the problem. Updating to latest operating system on my Mac, iPhone, and iPad does not fix the problem. The only common feature between the playlists showing up with missing songs is that they are all Smart Playlists, but many other Smart playlists do sync just fine and I don't see the difference between the ones that work and the ones that do not.

Has anyone seen this problem and have a fix?

Hi Julian Bashir,

Thanks for using the Apple Support Communities.

We're happy to provide some assistance.

Do you have an Apple Music subscription? If so, take a look at this page, as the iCloud symbols can tell you if the songs need to be downloaded to your library:

If songs are missing from your music library after you turn on Sync Library

If not, then you may need to redownload the purchased songs onto your iPhone:

Redownload music

Please let us know the outcome after trying the applicable steps above.

Cheers!

Thank you for replying Julian,

Do you notice the same issue after duplicating one of these Smart Playlists? Please be sure to follow these instructions when creating the Smart Playlist again: Create, edit, and delete Smart Playlists in Music on Mac.

If the issue persists even after creating the playlist again, please contact Apple Support directly for more help.

Cheers!

Those are the exact steps I am following, and yes, the songs in question are present and playable on my Mac. And I made sure they are not unselected in the desktop Music App.

Often times, these songs do sync in other smart playlists, it's only a few select smart playlists where absolutely nothing syncs, and it's the same ones every time which has me completely frustrated and confused as to why it is happening. Many of these are playlists that used to sync just fine but lately are not doing so.

To clarify, most of the songs on my library were either ripped from CDs that I own or purchased from other mp3 vendors. They play just fine in Mac and they also play on my devices. In fact, they will often sync to my devices via some Smart Playlists, but not other Smart Playlists. In the Mac, the Smart Playlists with the songs are all there, but on my device, the problem Smart Playlists will be there but not the songs within that list.
